You can't get rid of us that easily, sir :) I usually also post episodes a day or so earlier at the Facebook page as well. We've pretty much got a barrage of content coming up in the next couple days, mostly having to do with releases from this year's Starz Denver Film Festival.

If you'd like to know what we need to turn this country around, go see the movie, "Seven Days in Utopia." It's not especially about watching someone golf, you can see that on the Golf Channel. It's not about religion, although discovering the value of being spirituality centered is involved. It's about developing one's good character, achieving personal goals. Seeing beyond yourself and within yourself, to not blame others, but to be personally responsible for your own dream, earning your own successes. And so what if there's golf products/endorsements throughout the movie, expected and right "at home" with golfers like myself. Someone has to pay for the film! With all the hate, trash, shallowness, smut, and other negative movies & messages, the messages this movie/this story tells is much needed & welcomed-especially in these times! And I liked the actors, Duvall was real, sincere, wonderful, and the roles realistic/connected to real life experiences. I LOVED the movie and it's messages!

Mary, I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to comment on the review.

Frankly, you don't know me and I don't know you. I'm not about to pass judgement on the state of your faith or salvation, so I'd appreciate it if you afforded me the same courtesy.

While I might be a bit hard on films like the ones you mentioned, I understand that I look at film from a different perspective than someone who watches movies purely as a form of entertainement. Please let me be clear, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. It seems that we just come to movies from different points of view. I have friends who make a point of only watching movies without anything remotely resembling something objectionable. I understand and admire that standpoint. The only counter I have to those films is that I want to see movies made where every aspect of the quality of filmmaking is worthy of the message being presented. The Christian message simply deserves better in terms of quality.

As far as Seven Days of Utopia goes, I stand by every word I wrote. This film doesn't even have the Christian message fully in it. I've read a review of the film from a critic who honestly thought the film was promoting surface level Buddhist teachings. This movie ran from its faith. It compounded this issue by being deceitful about the ending. To take someone's money and then say they have to visit a website to get the ending is wrong and deceitful. There are no two ways about it.

The most frustrating thing about that is the scene with Robert Duvall's voiceover while the camera was hovering on the shot was the perfect ending for that movie. It was as spiritually insightful as anything else in the movie and would have been as close to a satifying conclusion as you could get without actually showing if the putt was made. If they absolutely had to try and point people to the website, put it at the end of the credits. It seperates the site from the film, which is necessary. When that text crawl came up, the entire theater I was in groaned and a few people even booed.

If you want to get into the actual content of the film, I would argue strongly that yes, it matters if the ball went in the hole. This isn't because it matters if the actual ball went in the hole. What happens at that point and how Luke responds to the consequences will show whether he has truly matured and how he has changed as a man is what actually matters. Making you go to a website to watch the author read a chapter from the sequel is the kind of sad gimmick that not even William Castle would have stooped to.

I'm more than happy to have an actual dialogue if you'd like to debate this film further. It's obvious that we have to very different viewpoints, and I honestly want to understand what you see in this movie that I don't. Should you decide that hurling insults accomplished your goal, have a great day.

Mary,

You obviously don't know Dave, because there's no way you would say that if you did. Dave is one of the most genuinely Christian people I know, not just one of those Sunday Christians, but someone who actually cherishes his faith and walks the walk. You should re-read your own comment and really think hard if someone would consider you a true Christian after reading that personal attack. Just because a movie has a Christian theme doesn't meant that all Christians must enjoy it, that it's beyond critique. If I'm a sci-fan, does that mean I have to enjoy ALL sci-fi movies, including "Battlefield Earth"? Get a grip.

You are a jerk. That was a wonderful movie. You call yourself a Christian. That I truly doubt. You are portraying yourself as such so you can discredit the movie and cause people not to go see it. What about Facing the Giants, Fireproof and many others. I suppose those are not worth seeing. You are in the right profession. Most all critics are so biased against anything worth while in movies.

Great points. The whole 'fake scare' tactic should be illegal. But I really want to see the original "Dark" again. It scared the dickens out of me as a kid. I can still hear those voices murmuring, "Sally, we waaaaaant you." It might hold up terribly, but I don't care!

And you would think given "Insidious'" strong box office performance that studios would be itching to copy it. Isn't that how Hollywood works?

Good point --- and, frankly, it might be a smart way for a future action movie to differentiate itself from the pack. Go for reality. It's a gimmick that just might work.

You're right about how we come to accept the violations of physics and the laws of nature in the movies. It's fine, I guess, for movies to make these exaggerations for our entertainment. But it would be interesting to see more action movies try to convey more of the reality of the difficulties of the stunts and the pain of the injuries, etc.

Well said. Both the faith bashing elements and extraneous cussing could have easily been cut without losing a single guffaw (assuming Ruth's evolution as a cusser stays intact. That running gag loses steam, but it's funny at first)

I've actually had a LITTLE bit of a change of heart about this whole thing. From the outset of writing this article, I was leaving a mental caveat for the third film in the Cornetto Trilogy.

The actual change of heart is that it would be hypocritical to decide that I'm completely done with two people whose work I've previously enjoyed without finding out what their intentions were. So, with that in mind, I'll be composing a letter about this and sending it off to Mr. Pegg's people to get their side of this and see if it was just a gigantic misstep or if they meant it to be taken the way I did. Should the result of that change my mind, I'll add an addendum to this review.

Yeah Dave I completely agree with this review. Overall I'd say the film is mediocre at best but to add the whole religion joke was unnecessary. I'm also a person of faith and while I'm not one to be offended hearing someone else's views on the universe in this film the subject made me feel uncomfortable. However, Dave if these two work with Edgar Wright again would you be interested?

It's a hard movie to rally around based on its silly dialogue and sillier plot points, but I still enjoyed "Battle: LA." I found the aliens vicious and threatening, and the sense of dread at what they might do next never left me.

Yes, the shaky cam is used way too much, especially during early scenes when they're trying to establish character, not shock and awe.

Kudos to Eckhart for anchoring an otherwise brainless romp.

I've been championing the film at my site, too.And I have no plans of stopping! Just re-watched it and enjoyed it just as much as the first time. The documentary genre needs films like this one that are funny, smart and poignant, too.

And if there's a better character around, fictional or real, than the "Troll 2" director I'd like to see him..

Went to the Disney site to claim coupon, but it tosses you over to the coupons.com site to print the coupon, and of course they want you to install their special "Coupon Printer" software in order to print the coupons. Well, I did some research on this supposed "coupon printer", and it seems questionable to me, possible spyware. I won't install such software on my system, so will have to pass on this deal...

Steven Seagal's inclusion is the one thing that gives me pause about forking out to see this movie. I hate that no-talent ass clown. It's downright painful watching him attempt to act. I don't expect action stars to be Anthony Hopkins or anything, but they should at least be able to look like they're not reading from cue cards and have more than one facial expression. I'm going to try to forget he's in it and go anyway, though, as it just looks like too much fun to miss.

(though I still can't believe you were disappointed by the Dark Knight - that blows my mind)

I hope you dig it. I seriously thought about using the cotton candy analogy, but I've used it before and didn't want to get stuck in a rut. I finished my review, then read Massawyrms's and immediately was thrilled with my choice.

So...to go for the Twilight crowd, will they pick Morbius to be the villain, only more sparkly?

It amazes me how much the studios still think they know what is best for a movie. Maybe I shouldn't say that as a blanket statement. I'm sure a studio at one point or another pulled the reins back on some director and saved a movie from being a mess.
Sony forced Venom for the sole reason that they knew it would look cool on the poster and create a lot of hype and give them a great opening weekend.
I'm not entirely convinced that they are concerned with making a good movie. They just want one that will look like a good movie for at least the first couple of weekends.
If this was the case for Spidey 4, then kudos to Raimi and Maguire!

I thought Spider-man 4 would end up being sort of a redemption, something awesome Raimi would create to redeem himself from 3. And even though 3 was bad compared to the first 2, which like you said, were two of the best comic book movies ever made, I didn't think it was totally unwatchable or anything. There were just too many story lines going on, I think. Personally, I wouldn't have brought in the Sandman character. And though I think Venom could have made a great villain, it should have been written better and given a movie unto itself. I think 3 should have just focused on Harry as the Green Goblin; a lot more could have been done with that.

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear that Raimi/MacGuire won't be back, and that they're now taking this solely to the teeny-bopper crowd. At least I still have Batman. :)

Good for Aronofsky ... too rare to see a director/actor these days turn down a project for the right reasons. Frankly, trying to make a 3-D Robo means it's far more about the quick money hit than the movie itself, most likely.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the fact that there is a Robocop remake in the works.
I can't help but think that this movie in 3d would have all the things that typically ruin a 3d film. Unlike Avatar that just utilizes the effect to provide the depth and distance of what you are seeing, Robocop lends itself to easily to bullets and shrapnel flying at you for no other reason than that it can.
Kudos for someone stepping up and saying "No".

I find it amazing that people like James Cameron can deliver such spectacle and yet still stumble over the aforementioned three C's.

Isn't that the stuff you get out of your system in film school? And isn't there someone in Cameron's inner circle who can tug him on the sleeve and say, 'hey, Jim, that piece of dialogue is pretty darn corny.'

Maybe not.

Well done Barry.
There is nothing better than an interviewer that is really into the topic at hand. It makes the subject interested and more interesting.
Oh..and Waking Ned Devine....I'm one of those people that still go nuts!

Really great episode this week everyone!

Melissa: You rock! Totally agree with you on YOUTH IN REVOLT and UP IN THE AIR.

I find myself laughing to myself from time to time at some of the jokes in YOUTH IN REVOLT. Everything from a simple pinky to seeing LA STRADA on Netflix gets a good chuckle out of me.

UP IN THE AIR really talks a lot about how we distance ourselves from society, especially over the last twenty years. The trend where people would rather avoid the relationships and connections is directly analyzed in a really captivating way.

I was really surprised at the tone of UP IN THE AIR- with regard to both the comedy and the drama. It was much funnier and much... darker? I supposed that's the correct word. Haha.

Keep up the good work guys!

I loved this movie as well, Dave. I really really dislike Nicholas Cage but man he was awesome in this movie. I loved that he would randomly throw in an accent. Eva Mendes also made up for Ghost Rider in this movie. She was actually compelling, a first for her. Herzog is one of my favorite filmmakers and this movie proves why, he isn't afraid of taking risks. One of my favorite movies of the year. Great review!

Huh...I always thought Keaton did the best at portraying both Wayne and Batman as separate characters. Clooney was always Wayne, Kilmore was always Batman. I think he was the only one that really took the difference between the roles seriously.

Looking forward to "Browncoat Sunday"! Have fun!

Great interview!
That is the 2nd time I have heard the same comments about the "jokes" that large film festivals have become. (Sundance, Cannes)
Kevin Murphy (MST3k) traveled all over the world and visited, or tried to visit, even sneaking in to some, and came to the same conclusion.
It is a shame that what are supposed to be the small windows for independent film makers have become just one more avenue for the major studios to exploit.

One of the things these situation shows is that you have to make sure your movie is available to people in as many options as possible so that they decide to "buy" over "steal". I also believe that if a film is good than even people who steal will eventually return the favor of a great experience by donating or buying the copy.

All this great news about piracy makes me want to pirate my own and dump it on bit torrent.... hmmm...

I spoke with a group of authors last April at Denver Starfest and asked them about their thoughts on the digital book and the subject of piracy came up. For the most part the authors view was "Steal what you want, we'll write more".

More than anything, I think it shows that if you make an incredible movie, people will find a way to watch it. While there are certainly downsides to movies being pirated, I think this is a rather positive story for all filmmakers and artists interested in reaching an audience, passionate about simply making the best movie they can.

"file sharing is possibly a viable form of marketing. "

It has been rumored that some sources of "leaked" films have been the studio themselves, so... You may have something.

I think the argument of the ethics of illegal file sharing are relevant, no matter what the outcome. I also think, however, that a freaking 81,093% increase in popularity on IMDB shows that file sharing is possibly a viable form of marketing. Notice, I said POSSIBLE.
