Ghost Rider 2? Really?

For the love of Pez people! WHY do we need another Ghost Rider movie? The first one was downright awful, and this is coming from a man with a special place in his heart for the terrible Captain America and Dolph Lundgren Punisher. I wish I could say I don’t know anybody who liked this movie, but I do. It should have been an R-rated affair that belongs in the same world as the Blade movies, but it was a nice big fat ball of suck instead.
Regardless of my opinion, apparently we’re getting a sequel according to Blood Disgusting. I could see the point of this if a reboot was being discussed with a new cast, similar to what happened with The Incredible Hulk. It would make sense to make a film that lives up to the potential that this character has. To bring back Nicolas Cage tells me that we’re going to get another crapfest. My only question is: Didn’t we, the audience, suffer enough the first time through?
SGR Episode 63 - 2009 Film Preview
Here’s why you should subscribe to the RSS feed if you don’t already. This got posted last night there, but I spaced posting it here until just now. Sorry about that.
This week, we talk about the 2009 movie lineup. Chris Stipp from Quick Stop Entertainment is gracious enough to join us again.
Please, stop attacking Sean Penn

Throughout this Awards season I’ve heard constant negative comments on the internet about Sean Penn. Whenever he seems to win an award for his performance in Milk, many seem to call him a humorless douchebag who only makes movies to win awards and preach his political messages. And I’m frankly tired of this.
First off, whether you like his personality or not, Sean Penn is undeniably one of the most talented actors of his generation. From his performances in Dead Man Walking, Mystic River or even Fast Times at Ridgemont High. You simply cannot look past his talent. And guess what? He’s winning awards for his acting, not his personality. Next off, sure he’s a prick, but so are the majority of actors. Sure, you may be rooting for Mickey Rourke. But he’s done worse things than anybody in Hollywood. And while Penn can seem like a bit of a blowhard, he definitely knows what he’s talking about. He’s not just bashing the right to be anti-establishment. Take for example his recent appearance on Charlie Rose. Watch what he has to say about Proposition 8 and it’s hard not to be moved.
And my final point, you find him humorless? Go see him in the best movie of 2008 and then me that he can’t be a likable, warm presence. Or even just watch his acceptance speech at last night’s SAG Awards. The guy made a freakin’ dick joke. So please, think before you whine.
Leave It To Deadpool To Bring Me Back To Wolverine

Ok, so it’s no secret that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is undergoing reshoots at the moment. Hugh Jackman even went as far as to e-mail Harry Knowles over at AintItCool.com. What people haven’t known, is what those reshoots entail. Well, /Film has just posted that apparently, those reshoots involve the merc with a mouth, Deadpool. Apparently, Deadpool is going to figure into the movie now as more than just a cameo.
With the reported change of his character, I’ve been more than a little skeptical of Jackman and crew letting Ryan Reynolds really let himself be Deadpool to the level he can be. I understand that this movie is PG-13, but if (by some miracle) Deadpool takes off, I’d really hope for an R-rated spinoff that would be absolutely insane. The fact that they’re focusing on Deadpool for the reshoots intrigues me to the point that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is officially back on my radar.
Oh, and if you want an idea of just how messed up Deadpool is, click the thumnail below. Don’t blame me, though. You’re the one who clicked on it.
12 Rounds Trailer Gives Hope
Ok, so it’s no secret that we have an odd interest in the acting career of WWE Wrestler John Cena. The Marine really made an impression on us. It’s been awhile since a movie has been THAT bad and THAT entertaining at the same time. I mentioned back on episode 61 what WeAreMovieGeeks had the poster for Cena’s newest cinematic entry, 12 Rounds. With the poster being a cross between the 16 Blocks poster and a Bourne poster, my hopes were raised that this could be as fun as The Marine.
With that in mind, I sought out the trailer, which is available on YouTube. This looks fun and I just HAD to share.
What the heck is that Creative Commons thing?
So, you’ve probably noticed the new little picture and some jargon talking about our licensing at the top of the page.
This is just us protecting the rights to our work and really doesn’t change a thing as far as your listening/reading experience.
Essentially, it’s just us laying down the rules under which we allow our work to be used, both with our articles and the podcast. It’s pretty much a legalese way of saying that anyone can use any of our stuff (whole, or a segment) that they want, as long as they attribute it to us. Common Sense Eludes The Academy
Yup, I just used big words to express just how mad I am about the Oscar nominations. I figured elocution would be more constuctive than unleashing the stream of obscenities that ran through my mind when watching/reading the nominations (/Film has a good comprehensive list up). It strikes me just how much the Golden Globes got right when you see just how much the Academy got wrong. My list of complaints can be read after the jump.
Goodbye relevance Oscars!
Well the 81st Academy Award Nominations are out and I can honestly say that they’re pretty damn embarrassing. And trust me, I’m not one of those whiny geeks who bitches every year. But the Academy just destroyed any relevance they had.
The Dark Knight was widely considered to grab the fifth Best Picture nomination. It scored nods from PGA, DGA and WGA, all important Oscar precursors. It was also widely acclaimed by critics and audiences. Many thought that not only would it be a great and worthy film to nominate for Best Picture, but also a way to boost the dismal ratings of the Oscars. But Harvey Weinstein wasn’t going to let that happen.
Okay, let’s compare. The Dark Knight had a score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Reader, has a score of 60%. The Dark Knight is widely considered a great film. The Reader is widely considered a mediocre film. But to the academy they can’t take a movie based off a comic-book seriously. But Holocaust = Instant Masterpiece.
I of course will still be watching the Oscars this year to cheer on my favorite movie of the year, Milk. But unfortunately for Sid Ganis, I don’t think many others will be.
First Starfest Guest Confirmed: William Katt
Well, it’s getting to be that time of year again. I know not a lot of our listeners/readers will be going to StarFest in Denver, but we’re getting excited for the fun to come. I still have one interview from last year that I’ve been trying to get finished since April, and that’s with the good gentlemen from Random Creatureface Films, but that will hopefully be up this week (along with a DVD review).
Anyway, the first confirmed guest has been announced for this year’s StarFest, and it will make any geek in their 30’s VERY happy and bouncy. William Katt has most recently been seen in an episode of this season’s Heroes, and he’s known by horror fans for his work in House or Carrie. The role that most people know him for, though, is as English teacher Ralph Hinkley in The Greatest American Hero. If you’re a child of the 80’s, you really owe it to yourself to look at his filmography and see everything he’s been in. Chances are that you’ll probably even remember the episodes Mr. Katt appeared in. This is one of the great things about the 70’s/80’s. If there was an actor/actress you loved, chances are they would appear in a bunch of shows. Mr. Katt just happens to be good in everything he shows up in.
As with last year, just because a guest is confirmed doesn’t mean that we’ll have a chance to sit down with them, but we’ll make every effort to talk to Mr. Katt if his schedule allows.
