SGR Episode 57 - Denver International Film Festival Wrapup
We’re a man short this week, but we still find a way to fill the hour between talking the DIFF and Twilight.
No Live Show Today
Through a set of technical and life circumstances, we won’t be broadcasting live today. We’re still recording and will try to get the show up by this evening. Sorry for the short notice.
Twilight : I Just Don’t Get It
- Twilight was one of your typical post-Potter young adults novels until one day…it spread. It came to the point of mass hysteria. Thousands of teen girls invaded this year’s San Diego Comic-Con (a haven for the geeky) on the day of the Twilight panel. Many internet bloggers commented on how they ruined their Comic-Con experience with their high pitched screams and inane questions aired at the cast. And since, they have stormed book stores to meet the cast. Causing near-riots. So yes, Twilight is like that new hot boy band. But here’s the thing, with a projected 60-70 Million opening weekend, this franchise is not going to go away. We are going to get sequel after sequel. And this makes me both scared and a little annoyed.
SGR Episode 56 - Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys
We’re back with another look at a Gilliam film. This time around, it’s 12 Monkeys.
Dave’s Review: Slumdog Millionaire
Dave’s Score: 9/10
Sometimes, a movie just bludgeons you with its brilliance to the point where you end up sitting dumbstruck in the theater while the end credits role. It doesn’t happen often, but it happened with Slumdog Millionaire. I think that when you have this kind of experience, it’s important to gain the perspective a couple days gives before writing a review. So, here I am, two days after having seen it, and Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire is just as brilliant a film as when I saw it on Monday night. As of right now, I can honestly say I can’t think of a single film I liked more than this that I’ve seen in 2008.
Dave’s Review: His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th
Dave’s Score: 8.5/10
On Friday night, Barry and I had the distinct privelage of going to the world premier of His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th while up at the Denver Film Festival. I have to be completely open and up front and say that I’ve only seen Jason X, Freddy Vs. Jason and the end of the original Friday the 13th. This gives me a unique perspective when it comes to a film covering the history of the poor kid who died at Camp Crystal Lake. The great news is that this documentary will appeal to both fans of the series and those who are curious about this film legacy.
SGR Episode 56 Video
Right before we start the news, you’ll notice my head thrown back in disgust. That’s about where we started recording the audio. We recorded everything before that, but hopefully that will be up tomorrow morning. In the meantime, Enjoy!
Is Pushing Daisies…Well, Pushing Daisies?
Right after the news that Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander were off Heroes, everyone was hoping that Pushing Daisies creator Brian Fuller would come back since he wrote some of the best episodes of the first season of Heroes. When approached about the topic, Fuller said that Pushing Daisies was his priority and would only consider it if the show wasn’t renewed.
Well, it looks like he might have time to consider going back to Heroes after all. AICN’s Hercules has just put up a story quoting “sources familiar with the situation” that ABC has decided not to pick up the rest of the show’s season. Also worth mentioning is that ABC has insisted that no decision has been made. Still, if this ends up being true, it’s really going to be a shame to see such a charming and unique show be cancelled.
Hopefully, ABC’s denial means that Daisies fans can find a way to unite and keep the show on the air!
Jonja.net Interviews Sanctuary’s Robin Dunne
It’s nice that we’re finally getting some fun sci-fi these days. Even better, one of the better shows is the Sci-Fi channel’s Sanctuary. Jonja.net’s Timelord had a chance to talk with Robin Dunne about the success of the show and how the show is made. Check it out! Thanks to Scorpiuscat for letting us know about this fun interview!
Dave’s Review: The Colour of Magic
Generally speaking, I try not to talk about DVD releases that the American public at large can’t access because they don’t have a region-free DVD player. I’m making an exception to that today. If any of you took my advice and bought/rented Terry Pratchett’s The Hogfather when it hit DVD in North America and were as mesmerized as I was, you’ll be curious to see how the follow-up is and it if it is up to the standard that The Hogfather set. The short answer is yes, but who wants to read a short answer? More details can be found after the jump. (more…)
