Disney Buys Marvel Ent. For $4 Billion
Huge news has hit this morning that will not only affect comic fans, but superhero movie fans as well. It was announced this morning that Disney is buying Marvel Entertainment for roughly $4 Billion. This means that Disney will own all of the comic and movie rights that Marvel now has. I see this as having some VERY interesting ramifications. Check them out after the break.
Jonja.net Giving Away Stargate Atlantis Season 5 On DVD
It’s really sad on my part that we don’t have more interaction with our friends at Jonja.net. I never get up to Denver to hang out with John, but the biggest highlight of every year at StarFest is getting to hang out with the crew from Jonja. They were kind enough to let me know about a contest they have running that might interest you.
We all know that Stargate Atlantis has run its course. By working their special brand of voodoo, John and his gang were able to get ahold of a copy of the final season of Stargate Atlantis. Not only that, instead of keeping it for themselves, they’re giving it away!
All you need to do is go to Jonja.net, sign up in their forums and post why you deserve the set. They’ll be pulling a random name. So far, I’d say you’ve got a pretty good shot at winning it.
Good luck!
The Blob Remake WILL Suck…
but not for the usual reasons. It really is easy to take aim at remakes and just shoot them down because they can’t live up to the source material. Sometimes, though, a film is ripe for a remake. I tend to feel this way about The Blob. I think properly done, it could make for a fun movie that has great kills and can be campy without losing its credibility. However, if we’re to believe the Variety article, Rob Zombie isn’t looking to go that direction.

Josh Green: 1986-2009
This week, we laid our great friend to rest. To say that Josh will be missed is the understatement of a lifetime. We appreciate all the thoughts and prayers sent our way, as well as all the e-mails. I’m gathering them all up and will be forwarding them to Josh’s family. The overriding theme of every e-mail is that everybody considered Josh a friend whether they had met him or not. I just wanted to take the opportunity to let you know that we feel the same way about our listeners and readers. We love getting feedback and not because it serves as an ego boost. We love having the interaction with you and the chance to get to know you some as well.
Feel free to still send e-mails if you want to podcast at screengeeks dot com, or you can leave a voicemail at (719) 553-5664. I’ll make sure everything gets routed on to the family.
Josh will be missed, not because he was an integral part of the show. He will be missed because of the kind of man he was, the best kind.
I’ve embedded the audio I posted over the weekend in case anybody hasn’t heard it yet.
SGR Episode 87 - Fincher’s The Game
This week, we tackle Fincher’s third film, The Game. We also talk briefly about John Hughes’ passing and Spielberg directing Harvey.
Toy Story 1 and 2 3D Trailer
Leave it to Pixar to not only bring 3D to one of their classics, but make it almost irresistable. Both movies for the price of one ticket? It’s absolutely brilliant and a great way to get people pumped up to see Toy Story 3. This trailer was shown before the Ponyo screening I was at last night and while there wasn’t cheering, the theater was definitely excited and buzzing after seeing this.
Dave’s Review: Crips and Bloods: Made in America
By Dave Minkus
Dave’s Score: 8.5/10
Crips and Bloods: Made in America is truly a unique film. Generally, when we see a documentary about a certain time in American history, most of the facts are found in writings. With this film, the history is recent enough that it’s possible to see exactly when these two legendary gangs came into being and the reasons for it. The film goes back as far as World War II for the full story, but this film is a fascinating look into where American society went horribly wrong and why we’re all responsible for the predicament we find ourselves in when it comes to gang violence.
Terry Malick’s Tree of Life coming this year!
NOTE : I am aware that it’s Terrence Malick. But I once saw George Lucas refer to him as Terry. And I like that.
According to Barry’s bible, Variety, Terrence Malick’s latest will be coming just in time for Christmas this year. This comes as a major surprise seeing as how Malick likes to take his time when it comes to making and releasing his movies. So naturally many expected this to be out next year. Of course the major talk about the movie has been about it coming to IMAX and containing dinosaurs. The former might not (actually absolutely has zero chance would be more accurate) happen seeing as how IMAX theaters will be pretty busy showing both A Christmas Carol and Avatar around that time. It looks like if Malick wants to get his movie seen he might need to get Sean Penn in a motion-capture suit and have him playing a photo-realistic looking T-Rex.
So even though I was pretty bored by the foliage-porn that was The New World, I’m still mad at myself for not seeing it in the theater. Because Malick’s films are definite events. Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line both rank amongst my favorite movies of all-time. So some time this holiday season prepare for the cinematic experience of voice-over, shots of trees, dinosaurs and people under the age of 50 walking-out.
SGR Episode 86 - Comic Con ‘09
Unfortunately, ScreenGeeks wasn’t able to have a presence at Comic Con this year, but we fortunately have friends who went. Andy Adair from Fanboyz.net and Chris Stipp from Quick Stop Entertainment join us to talk about the insanity that was the 2009 San Diego Comic Con.
Spielberg To Remake Harvey…Has He Gone Insane?
Leave it to remake news to get me to finally write an article. Friend of the site, Andrew over at gmanreviews, posted a story that Steven Spielberg has lost his fool mind and decided to remake the 1950 Jimmy Stewart classic, Harvey. I was all set to turn in early, and then this news absolutely set me off. I decided to turn my geek rampage into an article. Seriously, I’m about to go Tim Bisley about Spielberg. I’ll explain after the break.
